This was a secret screening I attended.
I was delighted it turned out to be this film. I have a like/hate relationship with Yorgos Lanthimos’s movies (absolutely hated The Lobster, was okay with Poor Things, really liked The Favorite). But had seen the trailer for Bugonia and was very interested.
In the end, I only kind of liked Bugonia.
The first 4/5 of the movie were very well done. I can’t deny Lanthimos is a good director and the worlds he creates are detailed and visually interesting. And Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons—both superb! This much of the film lived up to the promise of the trailer.
But I had issues with the way the whole thing wrapped up. I see the point the writer (which was not Lanthimos) was making, and it resonates with me to some extent in real life. I just don’t think this was the way to make this point. It really counteracted my enjoyment of the rest of the movie.
