The festival could not get the opening night movie to play (something in the digital protection could not be unlocked), so they persuaded the theater to play this one (which opens nationwide tomorrow) instead. I am so glad that happened. This was one of the most fun movies I’ve seen in a long while!
Everything in the trailer is in the movie–both literally and tonally. What the trailer does not prepare you for is how funny the movie is. I laughed out loud multiple times—in an uncrowded theater, so it wasn’t just infectious laughter. This film was gleefully maniacal!
It wasn’t perfect. There were a couple of places that seemed a little slow and/or odd—it felt like the filmmakers needed some slower moments between the high-octane ones. I’ve complained before about movies being plot-driven; this may be the first I’ve noticed one being rhythm-driven.
But those were minor distractions. The cast was good (especially the young girl), the characters were fun, and oh, all those delightful kills…
Watching this movie might just become an annual Christmas tradition for me.
