I was expecting a message movie about school shootings, or maybe a character study about how a student becomes a shooter. Instead, this was an examination of a mother and son’s relationship. Set within Chinese American culture, imcluding the conflicts between ancient and modern traditions. As it opened I feared it was going to be opaque and inaccessible, but I was soon drawn in and eventually riveted. And although the ending is rather depressing, the movie was so well made (script, acting, and direction) I have to recommend it to anyone who wants to watch a good drama.
