I really wrestled with this movie.
The first half was already a mixed bag. Some interesting characters and good humor. But also some hyper realism which was rubbing me the wrong way (too many n-words from the black gang members, and way worse, too much blatant racism from some of the white cops).
Then halfway through, the secret is revealed. Which turns it into a more creative and unique movie (and in a way, mitigates some of the racism). But it also got really weird; again, in ways I didn’t always appreciate. I can’t really go into them because they are all tied to the secret…
In the long run, i think the stuff I did not appreciate pulls the grade down to a C+. But that’s my personal taste—you may appreciate this movie more than I did.
