These filmmakers are a family of four (and their friends) who decide they are going to make a movie and work hard and get it done. (I have such a soft spot in my heart for groups like that at film festivals…) They’ve made so many movies now you probably can’t consider them underdogs, but I’m going to continue rooting for them.
There are a couple of aspects where you can see their homegrown approach showing through. But those minor issues are completely overwhelmed by their strengths:
Mood. The lensing and pace and sound design are all excellent.
Visuals. My god, the compositions and the tableaus and the level of detail…
The story is slow to develop but so marvelously filmed that I didn’t mind at all. I recall having similar feelings about their first movie I saw (Where the Devil Roams), but it feels like they are getting even better.
