| A- | Austin Film Festival 2021 |
This is my top gem of this year’s festival.
The script was really good, twisting through this woman’s history to look at the various (varied, but not completely different) relationships she’s had. The lead actress (Lorien Haynes), who was also the writer, did an excellent job in both categories. And the relationships were all interesting to watch (more kudos to the writing).
Of note is the approach Haynes took on this project. Each relationship was actually a short film, from which scenes were extracted for the larger movie. Haynes wrote all the scripts, but found a different female director for each short and gave each director free rein for hiring crew and additional cast. This gave each relationship a slightly different feel, as relationships do in real life.
My understanding is much of this was based on experiences from Haynes’ life. And the movie is actually a non-profit endeavor, where everyone worked for free and all revenue will be donated to charity. So a large, noble project that also serves as quality entertainment–quite a combo.
For now, the individual shorts are available online and should be mostly “safe” to watch without spoiling the overall movie–except for episodes 22 and 23.
