| B+ | Fantastic Fest 2024 |

As this film went on, I kept feeling like it was a remake of a classic film from the past, (with a more modern sensibility, despite being set in 1965). I won’t mention the classic’s name because that feels a tad spoilerish. But I was pleased to see in the end credits it was based on the same book <pats self on back>. Though afterwards I did some research and found this film used some of the same character and place names as the book and the original film but I had not recognized them, so I suddenly felt less clever.

But so many details are different, I’m not thinking it’s not a remake but a separate story set in the same world as the original. (Ah, I just did some more research. It is indeed a prequel to the classic.) In any case, even if you know the tie-in, I found this one well worth watching.

Especially because Julia Garner is in her usual acting form (great). And Dianne Wiest steals just about every scene she is in—her performance alone is worth the price of admission.
