The best film of the festival so far! I was apprehensive going in, based on the one-sentence description–my mind was filling in all sorts of sordid and dark scenarios. (Probably a statement about the way my mind works.) But the film is actually very innocent, if you will, and a roller coaster of emotions.
Obviously filmed during COVID, but with a premise that fits naturally into using video calls instead of face-to-face conversations. And the script takes full advantage of that approach. The script is full of subtleties and conflict. And is ultimately reaffirming about people and friendships, expected or unexpected.
Both Mark Duplass and Natalie Morales did great acting jobs, but I was especially impressed with her. I guess I’ve only seen her in sitcoms, but she really shined in this role. (Co-written by the two of them, directed by her.) An excellent job all around.
