I have grown disinterested in movies where a lot of weird stuff happens just because. My sense of it (especially after the Q&A with the writer/director afterwards) was that’s all they wanted to do with this movie. Even the choice of what story to present—why follow the newcomers just learning this weird stuff exists when you briefly present some characters who have been dealing with it for years? Let’s follow those guys into a more in-depth examination of the whole she-bang, why it exists, how it works! A missed opportunity, I think.
