The filmmakers say they were making a movie about race and class issues in Peru. But for me, the focus on the death aspect overshadowed everything else. And the characters’ reactions as the end of the play approached felt absurdist to me (as did their original acceptances of their roles). So I enjoyed some of the aspects of the film (the acting was quite good), but I just didn’t “get” it.
I was also disappointed in the end of the movie. It closed with one of those “we won’t tell you, but what do YOU think she did?” cuts, which I am usually not a fan of. Then followed it up with two end credit sequences that gave you more information about what had happened behind the scenes—one of which felt unnecessary, the other I’m not sure how that factored in to everything. And one final tag after the credits that was probably a meta nod to its theatrical background, but could be interpreted as reversing the ending of the movie? All of this just felt like stylistic folderol that added confusion for me.
