God damn it…

This was such a mixed movie. I hardly know how to grade it.

I liked the main character (Alexandra) a lot and her struggles and her putting everything on the line for what she believed in. I liked the way the film was directed in basically a single room, but I never lost interest while in there. This is the first feature film by this writer/director and believe it or not I am looking forward to what she does next.

But every character Alexandra interacted with ranged from being snotty to being an asshole. Many would be dressing her down, suddenly agree to help her, then switch back to being a jerk to her in a span of 15 seconds. Most of them felt like plot devices, written to look like there was conflict.

And then the ending. God damn the ending. It was surprising, but in that jaw-dropping, “that’s not who I thought she was at all” kind of way. Maybe you could argue that she broke under all the emotional pressure and made a bad choice. Maybe you could argue she didn’t do what I wanted so I’m just angry. But it felt to me like she went insane, and it did not feel true to me. I won’t say any more so I don’t spoil it for anyone who wants to watch it. But God damn it…
