I will say up front that the origin of the portal is strange (and unique), but the care taken in the lead-up to it really helps you suspend your disbelief. And once you do, this is a good movie.
It was very character driven, and explored what might happen if real people got involved in a situation like this. It maybe waved its hands about a couple of details, but not obnoxiously so. And had a nice little surprise at the end (following the rules that had been set up throughout the film). I enjoyed it.
